Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School – Chiang Mai

We had a few things planned while we were in Chiang Mai, and one of them was a cooking class at the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School.  Mr Ana and I have always been interested in food and cooking (and of course, eating!!), so a cooking class was on our to do list.

We were picked up promptly in the morning and taken to the local food market to buy our ingredients for our lesson.  Mr Ana and I didn’t pay too much attention to our instructor at this stage, as she was giving descriptions of herbs that we were already familiar with 🙂 So I wandered around looking at the fresh flowers while Mr Ana looked at the fresh fruit and juices with fascination.

When we arrived at the cooking school we got cracking with food preparation.  We had quite a few things to get through – chicken yellow curry, steamed fish in banana leaves, chicken in cashew nuts, fried noodles with pork and egg, prawn salad, and bananas in coconut milk.

For the first few classes, we went into a large class room and watched our instructor cook the dish – the classroom had a mirror angled towards the instructor’s cooking station, so we could see exactly what she was doing.

Then it was our turn to go to our individual cooking stations and have a crack at it.  It was a completely hands on class, right down to chopping the garlic.

And boy were the dishes delicious!

We received cook books to take home with us – and I still make the fried noodles.  I’ve also bought the cooking school’s other book and we make a few dishes from it regularly.  I highly recommend this cooking class if you want to do something a little different and fun – and of course, eat some yummy food as well!
